EAST TEXAS MUSIC TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION
2009  TEACHER-AWARDS NOMINEES
EAST TEXAS MUSIC TEACHERS'
ASSOCIATION
Having worked side by side with Shelly Davis on numerous projects for both ETMTA and our
individual studios, I can attest to her above average teaching qualifications.
Mrs. Davis upholds strong professional standards and her students are successful
because of her commitment to excellence.

As a new Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, Mrs. Davis has demonstrated commitment not only
to her students, but also to the teachers of ETMTA.  Mrs. Davis is our first “homegrown” NCTM, and
we are truly honored to have been a part of the process.

Mrs. Davis work with her students is inspiring because she uses her creative abilities to engage her
students’ minds and hearts.  Mrs. Davis is devoted to developing lifelong musicians—musicians
who serve their communities and become avid promoters of music education.  This devotion is
evidenced in her work to develop a Service Project Committee for our association, which helped in
MTNA’s efforts to raise funds for music teachers affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Due to her efforts in
creating a practice-a-thon, our students were able to raise over $2,500!

As a colleague I have benefited from watching Mrs. Davis teach and have become a better teacher
from her example.  She is not one to let limitations stand in the way of accomplishing what she has
set out to do.  There are no pianos at the event?  Then let’s find a way to get them there!  We need
something fresh for the summer studio program and there is nothing that meets my student’s
needs?  I’ll just create my own curriculum!  I need a creative way to teach this concept—I’ll create
my own manipulative and teach my students visually and kinesthetically!

Mrs. Davis has faithfully served ETMTA for sixteen years.  She has continually worked to make the
association better by minimizing the work loads of festival coordinators, committee chairs, and
officers through her computer skills.  Mrs. Davis is always creating forms, brochures, schedules,
and data bases.  She is always willing to jump in and help, tutor, or cheer on everyone who needs
her expertise.  All of this is in addition to her work as Festival Coordinator, Service Project Co-chair,
Secretary, Vice-President, and now President-Elect.

It is a great honor to work with such a talented and creative teacher whose dedication and
commitment to excellence has benefited not only her students, but the entire association.  Without a
doubt, Mrs. Davis is our teacher of the year and we proudly nominate her for TMTA Teacher of the
Year.

ETMTA's  2009
Texas Music Teachers Association
Teacher Award Nominees:

Shelly Davis, NCTM, Teacher of the Year
Glenda Moore, Pre-Collegiate Teacher
Maria Guenette, Collegiate Teacher
When I think of the word “professional,” Glenda Moore, Immediate Past President of East Texas Vice-
ETMTA was participating in the TMTA convention as delegates, volunteers, teacher recognition
nominees, and even had our name in the running for TMTA’s Best of State!  Not only did this open the
door for our teachers, but it presented a wide world of opportunity for our students.

If you were to ask Miss Moore why she does what she does she will promptly reply “For my
students!”   This attitude of student promotion has benefited all of ETMTA’s students.  Miss Moore
has led the way by participating in the Publication Competition, Original Composition Competition, All-
Star Festival, and Convention Ensembles.  With all of these events she has not only promoted her
own students' participation, but other teachers' participation as well.  Miss Moore’s students have
consistently placed in these competitions and this is a testament of her dedication.

As website chair Miss Moore single-handedly launched ETMTA into the 21st century by designing
and currently maintaining the association’s website.  She has also redesigned ETMTA’s Service
Project by reaching out to the community library to find out what current music resources our
association can help make available to the public.  This desire to give students' opportunities to give
back and also share their music with the community is just one of her many gifts to ETMTA.

As current President of ETMTA, I must say that Miss Moore elevated the level of excellence required
of its ETMTA’s presidents.    I truly am humbled, and picking up where she left off has not been an
easy task.  She has inspired me to think big, push beyond the boundaries, not to take no for an
answer, and to keep pursuing goals that we have yet to reach.  Miss Moore launched a vision of
greatness September 2005, and ETMTA members are gradually bringing that vision to life.  It is truly
heartfelt when I say that ETMTA would not be where it is today without Miss Glenda Moore.  It is for
this reason that I have the privilege of nominating her as TMTA Outstanding Pre-College Teaching
Achievement Award.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
GLENDA MOORE
PRE-COLLEGIATE TEACHER
MARIA GUENETTE
Collegiate Teacher
Maria is new to our local association.  Although her award winning resume is impressive, it is her
warm personality, attention to detail, and willingness to serve that makes a lasting impression on
those who meet her.  From serving as an adjudicator, to actively participating in our local events, Dr.
Guenette has contributed so much to our association.

We are very proud to support Dr. Guenette as she serves as keyboardist for the East Texas
Symphony Orchestra.  She recently played harpsichord in five back to back concerts for local
schools featuring Vivaldi’s music along with Classical Kids LIVE!.  Dr. Guenette also currently
performs in a piano and marimba duo called the “Well Tempered Keyboards.”  Her active role in the
East Texas music community has made her such a vital part of ETMTA.

We are so grateful to have Dr. Guenette as part of the association as she helps to expand our beyond
the way we have always done things.  It is an honor serving with her as a colleague, and the college
students she works with have the honor of having such a distinguished instructor.
