Nominating Statement by current ETMTA president, Shelly Davis, NCTM:

Here are some other highlights from her career:  private Christian school teacher for 5 years, sheet music department of Mundt music for 4
1/2 years, private piano teacher for 20+ years; ETMTA service as vice-president, librarian, treasurer, and membership committee chair.  Her
students have participated in ETMTA Fall Festival and Achievement Auditions, TMTA theory exams, school talent shows, and school and
church activities such as worship teams, etc.  She has been a church pianist for 38 years, playing in some capacity for church for over 40
years.  Sonia states:  "My mother was my first piano teacher...helping me through the "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" book.  I began official
lessons in third grade from one of our little Idaho town's premier piano teachers, Mrs. Goldie Yost."  She attended Black Hawk College in
East Moline, Illionois, graduating with a 2-year degree in music.
Here is a quote from Sonia's nomination biography:  "After moving to East Texas, I began working in the sheet music department of Mundt
Music in Tyler.  This was an education in itself!  I learned a lot, not only from Mrs. Mundt, but from wonderful piano teachers in the area who
helped me learn so much about the print music industry; teachers like George Mueller, who patiently explained how to order the classics,
trumpet sticker!  Leaving Mundt Music after the birth of my youngest daughter, I did not want to lose the friendship and wealth of knowledge
of our local teachers.  That is one of the main reasons that I joined ETMTA.  They help me to be a better piano teacher and strive for
professionalism in my private home studio.
"As a private teacher now, I specialize in beginners and adults.  Also, I love to teach improvisation using the
Professional Chord System by
David Higginson.  This enables me to bring together my teaching with my love of church music as I train students to play for worship teams
or just for themselves as they sing along.  This is a ministry for me, as well as striving to be the very best teacher that I can be for each of the
students that God sends my way."
It is my privilege to announce Mrs. Sonia Carpenter as the ETMTA Teacher of the Year.  She is a great asset to our association, faithful to
assist in local events, kind and gracious to her students and fellow teachers, and sharing her expertise in the
Professional Chord System at
one of our Professional Development Sessions during the 2010-2011 year.  We are proud to call Sonia our colleague and friend.
